Just a little bit of progress on what I'm doing now. I wish I could do it faster and I wish I could figure out what I'm supposed to do with the hair other than add weak high lights.
Is choosing colors ridiculously hard for anyone else? I have a really hard time choosing colors for shadows and highlights to the pint that I just sample from other artwork.

Nice work 
generally when i work with color i start dark and build up my lighter tones and detail, or go grey scale and get my values down first then slowly add in color tones over top. If you're ever stuck there are some fantastic tutorials floating around dA, and it also doesn't hurt to experiment with different techniques.
